With a little bit of effort, you can pick up a perfectly reasonable Strat for around $250 - and these last an average lifetime, not just the average rock lifetime.

The David Gilmour Strat - whatever you think about sticking names on guitars (they aren't going to stop soon) the Fender Custom Shop have brought out their 'collaboration' with the pedestrian eponymous one - available in two finishes, N.O.S. or Relic - (probably wouldn't have chosen that last one myself). Just wait until these start turning up on the market.

Starter Kits

These, you can get as a total bargain... How many kids get the pester power going for Christmas and get their Stagg starter kit on the day itself - only find that learning the guitar does actually take a bit of work - best months, around March or April, say no more.
